The Tang Dance, Jersey Drill and the Dance Culture Behind Jersey Club

Jersey club has always been dance music first. Its dance styles and offshoots are a big part of how it keeps finding new listeners.

By Jersey Club Radio · 2026-09-29

The way to judge a Jersey club record is to watch what it does to a room. The genre came out of Newark in the early 2000s as a local version of Baltimore club, and it was made at 130 to 140 BPM for dancing.

Jersey drill

In the mid-2010s a darker branch appeared. Jersey drill brought Chicago drill influences into the club template. It keeps the bounce and changes the mood.

Where the Tang dance comes from

The Tang dance started in Philadelphia and became closely tied to Jersey club. It's built on expressive arm movements that look like boxing or flexing, and dancers often perform it battle-style. It went viral on TikTok in the 2020s and brought the music to people who had never heard of Newark.

How dancers spread the sound

The pattern repeats through the genre's history. First the parties, then MySpace, SoundCloud and mix CDs, then video apps. Each wave brought new dancers, and the dancers brought new listeners. That line runs all the way to Lil Uzi Vert's 2022 hit "Just Wanna Rock," produced by Newark's MCVertt. Read the story behind that record.
